Filmytell: Bringing Indian Cinema Closer to Audiences Through a New E-Theatre Model

The Indian film industry produces thousands of stories every year across multiple languages and genres. Yet, for many small and mid-budget filmmakers, reaching audiences remains one of the biggest challenges. High theatrical distribution costs, limited screen availability and the difficulty of securing conventional OTT deals can leave deserving films without the visibility they need.

Filmytell is emerging with a different approach to this challenge through its Pay-Per-View (PPV) rental-based E-Theatre model.

A New Approach to Digital Film Distribution

Filmytell, founded by Nitin Udmale, is being developed as an E-Theatre platform where audiences can rent movies instead of committing to a monthly subscription. The model is designed to provide filmmakers with a more direct route to their viewers while giving audiences the option to pay specifically for the content they want to watch.

The platform positions this concept as “India’s Pocket Theatre”, bringing cinema to smartphones, smart TVs, tablets and web users.

Supporting Independent and Regional Cinema

One of Filmytell’s key areas of focus is independent, small and mid-budget cinema. Many such films struggle to compete with productions that have significantly larger promotional and distribution budgets.

Through a rental-based model, Filmytell aims to create an additional digital distribution opportunity for filmmakers while allowing producers to retain ownership of their content and decide rental pricing.

The platform also focuses on regional cinema, including Marathi, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Assamese, Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Punjabi and other Indian-language content.

Reaching Audiences Beyond Major Cities

Filmytell’s approach also reflects the changing entertainment habits of audiences in Tier-2, Tier-3 and rural India.

With smartphones and affordable internet becoming increasingly accessible, viewers outside major metropolitan cities are becoming an important part of India’s digital entertainment ecosystem. Filmytell aims to make regional and independent content easier to discover and watch for these audiences.

The platform also recognizes the entertainment needs of people who have moved away from their home states, including audiences from Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh who may want to watch content in their preferred languages.

A Pay-Per-View Alternative to Subscription OTT

Unlike traditional subscription-based OTT services, Filmytell’s core concept revolves around renting individual content.

For viewers, this means they can choose a particular movie or program and pay for that viewing experience rather than necessarily taking a monthly subscription. For filmmakers, the model is intended to establish a more direct connection between their content and its audience.

The platform also incorporates features such as regional-language discovery, recommendations, trailers and direct content sharing.

More Than Just Movies

Filmytell’s proposed content ecosystem extends beyond feature films. The platform aims to support short films, documentaries, web series, mini-series and vertical dramas, creating space for different forms of storytelling.

Its expanding accessibility across Android, iOS, web and connected-TV platforms is intended to make digital cinema available across a wider range of viewing environments.

Nitin Udmale and the Rural India Perspective

The vision behind Filmytell is closely connected with the professional journey of its founder Nitin Udmale.

An agriculture graduate from Maharashtra, Udmale was selected as a Class-One Officer through MPSC before choosing to resign and pursue entrepreneurship. He later spent nearly four years with BP Energy in business management.

His experience across villages, small towns and emerging markets gave him exposure to rural consumer behaviour, aspirations and entertainment preferences. This understanding became an important influence behind the Filmytell concept.

His philosophy can be summed up through the idea that “Audience is Bhagwan”—technology should reduce the distance between storytellers and viewers.

Building a Digital Theatre Ecosystem

Filmytell represents an attempt to rethink how Indian films can reach audiences in a changing digital environment. By combining pay-per-view rentals, regional content and direct digital distribution, the platform aims to create opportunities for films that may otherwise struggle to find traditional distribution channels.

Its broader vision is to develop a digital theatre ecosystem where filmmakers can connect more directly with audiences and viewers can discover stories across languages and formats.

With its focus on affordability, accessibility and independent storytelling, Filmytell is working toward a simple proposition: every story deserves an audience.
